The Science of Autumnal Leaves

Autumn Leaves: Nature's Colourful Countdown

Crackling underfoot, swirling in the crisp autumn breeze, leaves transform from vibrant green to fiery reds, sunny yellows, and burnished browns. Autumn's arrival paints the landscape in a breath taking display of colour, and it's the perfect time to get outside and celebrate nature's annual countdown to winter!

The Science Behind the Spectacular Show

Have you ever wondered why leaves change colour in autumn? It's all thanks to a clever trick played by Mother Nature! Throughout spring and summer, leaves are busy factories, using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce a special green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is like a superhero for leaves, allowing them to capture sunlight and turn it into energy for the tree to grow.

But as the days shorten and temperatures cool in autumn, a fascinating shift occurs. The production of chlorophyll slows down, eventually stopping altogether. This allows other pigments, hidden within the leaves all along, to take centre stage. These pigments – called carotenoids (think orange carrots!) and anthocyanins (the same pigment that makes blueberries blue!) – create the vibrant reds, oranges, yellows, and purples we associate with autumn foliage.

Pemberton's Autumnal All-Stars

Pemberton boasts a diverse range of trees, each putting on its own dazzling autumn display. Here are a few of the local superstars:

  • Marri (Corymbia calophylla): This iconic Australian tree explodes with vibrant reds and oranges, making it a real showstopper. Look for its distinctive rough bark and urn-shaped gumnuts.

  • Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor): One of the tallest trees in the world, the Karri puts on a more subtle autumn display. Its leaves turn a soft yellow, offering a beautiful contrast against its towering white trunk.

  • Sheoak (Allocasuarina fraseriana): Don't be fooled by its name – the Sheoak isn't actually an oak tree! It's easily identified by its spiky needles and distinctive "cones." In autumn, its foliage takes on a soft, golden hue.

  • Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis): This hardy tree is known for its smooth, black bark. Its leaves turn a warm yellow in autumn, adding a gentle touch to the overall colour palette.
